The 2005 SELD District Championships actually started on Friday, May 13, 2005.  Brian Hayes of North Sails join seven early bird Lightning sailors for a Lightning Lab.  Brian was outstanding!  We launched our boats in moderate breezes.  Brian set out a few marks and manned a motorboat.  As we ran several practice starts and races, Brian came up behind each boat and gave individual coaching on sail trim, tactics, and crew position.  We stayed out for several hours.  Brian proved to be a gifted coach.  His manner was positive and helpful.  Everyone took away three or four pointers to improve their racing skills.  Thanks Brian for a great day.

Back on shore we gathered at the clubhouse to talk about the day and enjoy our favorite beverages.  Brian gave us an on shore debriefing that wrapped up the clinic perfectly.  The yacht club served up burgers for everyone.  Later that evening, the first of several raffles to support Hospice was held.

By Saturday morning, fifteen boats were in and we headed out to do battle.  The breezes were very nice - often topping 10 knots.  The race committee got in four great races.  Bob Harkrider, with Sharon and Tom Shroeder as crew all but put the trophy on ice as BooNoo put up a 2-1-2-1 to finish with six points.  Terry Tyner, who was fresh off two victories at the Lake Murray Sailfest and Cottonwood Regatta sailed a very consistent 4-4-3-4 to finish the day in second.  Ryan Rhulman and Pete Marriott tied for third.

Saturday night we partied again.  This time the club served up a great chicken dinner.

On Sunday morning Terry nailed a bullet in race one.  Bob took a six and the championship was his.  Ryan took a deuce to move into second place.  The second race set up a great duel for second between Marriott, Rhulman, and Tyner.  Pierce Barden became the fifth skipper to win a race showing how much balance there is in this district.  Pete took a two to wrap up second place.  Ryan need a five for third but finished sixth.  Final standings were Harkrider - Marriott - Tyner.

One of the lighter moments of the regatta occurred on day one.  We were on the same race course as a phrf fleet.  Harkrider was beating upwind when this voice came out of nowhere to cheer him on.  Turned out to be a phrf skipper with a very loud hailer on board.  About three or four of us were in the vicinity when the skipper hailed and it was pretty weird.  Rhulman commented at dinner that it momentarily sounded like God was checking in!  Well, maybe Triton.

Thanks to Pete Marriott, Carter Utzig and LNYC for hosting a great event.
