SAILING INSTRUCTIONS

 

1 RULES

The regatta will be governed by the ‘rules’ as defined in the Racing Rules of Sailing.

 

2 NOTICES TO COMPETITORS

Notices to competitors will be posted on the official notice board located at Catawba Yacht Club.

 

3 CHANGES TO SAILING INSTRUCTIONS

Any change to the sailing instructions will be posted before 0930 on the day of the regatta.

 

4 SCHEDULE OF RACES

4.1 Racing is scheduled as follows:

April 12            9:30AM: Competitor’s meeting

10:30 AM: First warning signal

 

4.2 The numbers of races scheduled is as follows:

Our target goal will be 3-5 races on Saturday. This goal does not limit the PRO to any amount of races per day.

4.3 When more than one sequence of races will be held on the same day, the warning signal for each succeeding race will be made as soon as practicable.

4.4 No warning signal will be made after 3:00 PM.

4.5 A break of approximately 45 minutes shall be scheduled around the Noon hour.

 

5 RACING AREAS

The Racing area will be directly to the west, north, or south of CYC Harbor.

 .

6 THE COURSES

6.1 The diagrams in Addendum A show the course, including the approximate angles

between legs, the order in which marks are to be passed, and the side on which each mark is to be left.

 

7 MARKS

7.1 Rounding marks will be Yellow Cylinders..

7.2 The starting and finishing marks will be the race committee signal boat at the starboard end and an orange buoy at the port end.

  

8 THE START

8.1 Races will be started according to Appendix Q.

8.2 The starting line will be between a staff displaying  an orange flag on the signal boat at the starboard end and the port-end starting mark.

8.3 There will be two starts:  MCScow/Laser [MC class flag] and Portsmouth/Ensign [J22 class flag].

8.4 A boat starting later than 5 minutes after her starting signal will be scored Did Not Start. This changes rule A5.

8.5  The starting line is closed.

8.6  Rule 30.1 will be in effect.

 

9 CHANGE OF THE POSITION OF THE NEXT MARK

9.1 When signaling a change of course race committee may not display the compass bearing to the new mark nor a plus or minus.  This changes rule 33. 

 

10 THE FINISH

10.1 The finishing line will be between a staff displaying an orange flag on the finishing boat at the starboard end and the port-end finishing mark.

 

11 PENALTY SYSTEM

11.1 If an infringing yacht has its spinnaker drawing at the time of the infringement, drops it completely below the gooseneck while taking her penalty and resets it, the penalty is one turn instead of two. This modifies rule 44.2.

 

12 TIME LIMITS

12.2 Race Committee may assign finish positions to boats that fail to finish within 30 minutes of the first boat in her class that sails the course and finishes. This changes rules A3.

 

13 PROTESTS AND REQUESTS FOR REDRESS

13.1 Protest forms are available at the clubhouse. Protests shall be delivered there within the protest time limit.

13.2 For each class, the protest time limit is 30 minutes after the race committee signal boat docks at the end of the day of racing.  The same protest time limit applies to requests for redress. This changes rule 62.2.

13.3 Notices will be posted within 30 minutes of the protest time limit to inform competitors of hearings in which they are parties or named as witnesses. Hearings will be held as soon as possible.

 

14 SCORING

14.1 The low point scoring system of Appendix A will apply.

14.2 One race is required to be completed in order to constitute a regatta.

14.3 (a) When fewer than five races have been completed, a boat’s series score will be the total of her race scores.

(b) When from five to ten races have been completed, a boat’s series score will

be the total of her race scores excluding her worst score.

 

15 SAFETY REGULATIONS

15.1 A boat that retires from a race shall notify the race committee as soon as possible.

 

16 EQUIPMENT AND MEASUREMENT CHECKS

A boat or equipment may be inspected at any time for compliance with the class rules and

sailing instructions. On the water, a boat can be instructed by a race committee member to proceed immediately to the club docks for inspection.

 

17 PRIZES

Prizes will be given as follows:

First place shall be awarded to the winning skipper in each of the following classes designating him or her the club champion for that class:

MC Scow and Laser scores shall be extracted from the combined class scores

Ensign scores shall be extracted from the combined Ports/Ensign scores.

Portsmouth scores shall be the combined Ports/Ensign scores.

 

First place shall be awarded to the skipper with the lowest score between the combined MC Scow/Laser and combined Ports/Ensign regardless of class designating him or her the overall club champion.

 

18 DISCLAIMER OF LIABILITY

Competitors participate in the regatta entirely at their own risk. See rule 4, Decision to Race. The organizing authority will not accept any liability for material damage or personal injury or death sustained in conjunction with or prior to, during, or after the regatta.  A signed letter of waiver must be completed by each skipper prior to racing.
