JOHN SAWYER LEADS NINE BOATS TO SERIES CHAMPIONSHIP
John Sawyer from Carolina Yacht Club in Wrightsville Beach, NC topped a field of nine Lightnings to win the 2009 Traveling Series Championship. John combined second place finishes at the District Championships, Southern Open, and Wrightsville Regatta with a fourth place at Augusta and a first place at Beaufort to win the series with a low score of 3.000. For the second year in a row, Marcus Moehlman was second. John Pelosi finished third. In his first time qualifying for the series, young Will tyner from Columbia placed an impressive fourth. Veteran skipper and SELD commodore Pam Barron took fifth. Pam also sailed the most regattas at eight. Henry McCray, Bill Sloger, Dennis Baker, and Lauren Beauchamp completed the nine boat field. The nine skippers represented an increase of two boats over the number of 2008 qualifiers. Special thanks to Bill Sloger who managed the scoresheets for the season and tabulated the final results.

HARKRIDER AND TYNER DUEL TO A CLASSIC FINALE IN CHARLESTON
Young Wil Tyner threw up 4 aces on Saturday to post what appeared to be a commanding lead at the Hobcaw Regatta in Charleston on October 23. Bob Harkirder had other ideas and on Sunday stormed back with a vengeance with three bullets of his own to win the event in a classic Southeastern Lightning District contest.

Atlanta Cup 2009

Four approximately 1 hour races were completed on Saturday in 8-15 winds. Sunday’s racing was abandoned due to lack of wind. Racing was tight between Hofmeister & Harkrider but Hofmeister won with 3 bullets. This was the first time Karen Dial placed after returning to Lightnings 4 years ago. Congratulations to all!

2009 SELD DISTRICT CHAMPIONSHIPS
April 25-26, 2009
Columbia, SC
|
After postponing for lack of wind until late Saturday afternoon we left shore for the first two races of the day. Race 1 was started in 3 to 6 knots and was shortened by the race committee at two legs for light and shifty winds which disallowed the results as our Class rules require three legs for our sanctioned events. Race two saw building winds and a new steady direction that allowed a fun race to take place. Newcomer Paul Whitesides quickly nailed the first shift after the start and led at the first and second marks. Terry Tyner took advantage of a late takedown by Paul's team and rounded inside leading the race to the finish. Marcus Moehlman quickly closed for a second followed by John Sawyer and Paul Whitesides. Day two was forecast to be a drifter but we started on time with 4 to 7 knots with plenty of Sunday morning chop courtesy of our powerboat friends making it a real challenge to keep the boat moving. District icon Lenny Krawcheck popped off the starting line and never got threatened again. John Sawyer was second followed by Bob Harkrider and Richard Walkirk. Sunday's second race was won by John Sawyer who sailed through the fleet downwind for a decisive win followed by Marcus Moehlman, Paul Whitesides and Terry Tyner. Sunday's third race was won by Marcus Moehlman followed by Terry Tyner, Richard Walkirk and newcomer Henry McCray. The last race of the event was won by Pierce Barden followed by Terry Tyner and John Sawyer. After trying conditions PRO Jan Jernigan got in all five races in doing an outstanding job. Several things about the event are of interest, no skipper won more than one race leaving one to believe things are getting more competitive. Each of the top three skippers won a race. There were three tie breakers in the event with the first one contesting positions three and four in favor of Marcus Moehlman over Paul Whitesides (who sailed a great regatta). The same held true for Pierce Barden who forced a tie breaker over last year's champion Richard Walkirk for fourth place honors. The third tie breaker in the event was won by Lauren Beauchamp over Will Tyner to decide places eleven and twelve respectively. At the end of the event it was Terry Tyner who will join the long list of respected names on the District Trophy. "It is truly an honor to win this award after 17 years on the hunt" said Terry at the awards presentation. Terry was well supported by his team of Robby Wilkins and Amber Parshalls both of Columbia. In second was John and Becky Sawyer of Wrightsville and Elizabeth Derks of Columbia who sailed a great event and a close threat to winning. In third was Marcus Moehlman with Eli and Jen Putnam of Augusta also sailing fast and smart over the weekend.
The event was great thanks to the help of the Columbia Sailing Club members who gave their time to help us have fun! No one is more deserving of thanks than David and Dianna Wrisley, Karen Dial, and Kathy Gaddy who may not have been seen unless you were around when the coffee started, breakfast was put out, grilling steaks of mixing rum punch.
Districts will be held by the folks from Wrightsville Beach and Carolina Yacht Club next year so we will see you there!

2009 SPRINGBOARD REGATTA
Western Carolina Sailing Club
April 4-5, 2009
|
Terry Tyner broke out front in race one and was not challenged as he rounded every mark on first to break on top of the Spring board Regatta. On Sunday he placed second in race one for a scant 2 point lead over charging Marcus Moehlman. Terry opened the door a little in race four. Races 1 and 2 were in very light air. The breeze kicked in for race three and Terry posted a five. Unfortunately for Marcus, he posted a nine and Terry held on to first. John Pelosi stormed to second with an ace in race three. Will Tyner sailed a great 2-4-8 regatta to take 4th.
Dennis Baker and company did an OUTSTANDING job with this regatta. The race committee worked very hard to get two legit races in light air. The hospitality was grand and the regatta beer required a bottle opener which says about everything that needs to be said! Thanks Dennis.
