JOIN THE CYC MC SCOW FLEET!
Catawba Yacht Club and Fleet 86 of the MC Scow Class Association invite all experienced racers to join us for racing at Catawba Yacht Club. Interested racers should contact Ron Wright by e-mail at rwright1@carolina.rr.com.
FAQs:
1. How often do you race?
CYC holds four annual series - one for each season of the year. The fall, winter, and spring series feature racing approximately every two weeks. We rotate Saturdays and Sundays. The current schedule can be found at the CYC homepage: www.catawbayc.org. Click Calendar.
2. What boats are raced?
The largest and most active one design fleet is the MC Scow. The MC Scow is a single handed one design racer. [See picture on the Fleet 86 homepage.] For a complete description of the MC Scow, and a ton of information, including available boats for sale, visit the national website at www.mscow.org
3. CYC is a private club. Is the public invited to race?
CYC has a non-member program to allow area residents a chance to race with us. For a nominal annual fee of $120 a year, you may bring your boat to CYC on any race day and use our club facilities for launching and racing. The fee is pro-rated at $30 per series if you begin in mid-year. You are required to trailer your boat in and out.
4. Are memberships available at CYC?
We are always seeking ACTIVE one design sailboat racers to join our club who want to participate regularly in club racing. We suggest that interested racers try the non-member program for a series and then seek membership sponsorship through an existing club member.
5. Are there any boats available for temporary use?
CYC has one club boat available to non-members who are sponsored by a local club scow member. Ron Wright maintains an MC Scow for use by prospective fleet members. Contact Ron for more info. .
6. Are MC Scows available for purchase?
Used boats are available for purchase throughout the Southeast in a variety of price ranges. Several boats are for sale at CYC. Price ranges vary from $2000 - $10,000 depending on age and condition. A competitive club boat can be had for around $2500 dollars.
7. You keep referring to "experienced racers". What about beginners?
CYC does not have a beginning sailing program. The learning curve for sailboat racing can be quite long - often as much as two years once beginning sailing is mastered. For this reason, we openly seek experienced sailors who can step right in and race. You do not have to be "Dennis Connor"! If you are comfortable sailing a sunfish, laser, or hobie cat, you would quickly learn the ropes on an MC Scow.
